The world of Westeros may soon grow even bigger. Author George R.R. Martin has confirmed that multiple Game of Thrones sequel series are now in active development, marking the strongest indication yet that HBO is ready to explore storylines set after the events of the original hit show.

The update has sparked excitement among fans worldwide, especially as interest in the franchise remains high with the ongoing success of House of the Dragon and the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Martin Confirms Sequels, Not Just Prequels

Speaking at a recent event attended by fan platform Los Siete Reinos, Martin revealed that HBO is exploring several new concepts — including sequels, not just prequels.

“Aside from The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development. Most are prequels. There are several in development — five or six series. Yes, there are some sequels,” Martin said.

While he did not share titles or production teams, the confirmation signals a major strategic shift from HBO, which has so far focused exclusively on earlier periods in the GOT timeline.

Release Date, Cast and Story Details Remain Unconfirmed

Despite the update, HBO has not announced official production timelines, cast details or whether fan-favorite characters from the original series may return.

One previously discussed project — the Jon Snow sequel reportedly led by Kit Harington — remains on hold, according to earlier reports. Martin’s latest remarks suggest that new sequel pitches may take priority as development continues.

Why This Update Matters

The original Game of Thrones concluded in 2019 after eight seasons, becoming one of the most impactful series in television history. Since then, HBO has focused on expanding the universe through prequels, including:

House of the Dragon

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (scheduled for 2026 release)

Until now, the future of Westeros — particularly after the reign of Bran Stark — has remained largely unexplored. A sequel series could finally revisit unresolved plotlines, shifting alliances, and character arcs left open after the controversial ending.

What a Sequel Could Mean for HBO and Fans

  • A post-Game of Thrones timeline opens major storytelling possibilities — and industry advantages.
  • For the fandom: non-resolved issues and plots left hanging might be tackled at last.
  • For the newcomers: the next installment could turn out to be an easy entrance to the series.
  • For HBO: the continuously growing Westeros is still a big streaming gamble, particularly with the GOT series being the most viewed content on Max.

The fans' guesses are already getting stronger on the internet, and people are talking about possible locations, actors who might come back, and North, Essos, and the Iron Throne's destiny as unexplored areas.
